With the long rainy season slowly coming to an end, it is now not too long away from the dawn of a new cricket season in Sierra Leone. The new season means a new opportunity and a new challenge to everybody involved in the sport; players looking to impress, coaching making sure that the teams are ready to compete and the Sierra Leone Cricket Association (SLCA) are ready to make this season the highest quality possible.
Kent Cricket Club have made an early start to the new season as the club ran a session for boys and girls between the ages of 5-12 years old as part of the club's community grassroots development program. This is Kent CC’s contribution to the Sierra Leone Cricket Association’s scheme to increase participation in the country. The Sierra Leone Cricket Association’s Cricket Development Officer, Joseph Pessima, lead the coaching session and was assisted by Kent Cricket Club coaches.
The aim of the session was to promote that cricket is fun and enjoyable. The session can be deemed a roaring success as some children were introduced to cricket for the very first time showing an increase of interest in the sport, while those who have been playing the game had had a skill based session in developing their batting, fielding and bowling skills, further developing the cricketers of tomorrow skills to ensure that the national team is able to compete with the giants of the game in years to come.
